BROADCAST / COMMUNITY STORYTELLING

Williamston Theatre

A story about local theatre and the people behind it

03 / 04

For this broadcast story, I wrote a script about the Williamston Theatre and its place in the Mid-Michigan arts community. I used an interview with co-founder Emily Sutton Smith to help tell the story of why the theatre started and what it means to local audiences.

INSIDE THE SCRIPT

I used the script as a roadmap for the finished video. I started by identifying the main story I wanted viewers to understand, then organized the anchor introduction, Emily’s interview clips, and my voiceovers so each part built on the last. Writing it out helped me plan the transitions, keep the story focused, and see how the interviews and narration would come together in the final broadcast piece.

02 / RESEARCH & WRITING

Listening carefully.
Communicating clearly.

Journalism has taught me to ask better questions, listen carefully, and make unfamiliar topics understandable. These two articles gave me the chance to learn from people doing meaningful work in their communities.

EVENTS & ORGANIZATIONAL RESEARCH01

Behind MSU’s Spring Concert

I spoke with organizers about what goes into Michigan State's Spring Concert, from the budget and artist selection to planning and promotion. Reporting this story gave me a closer look at the many people and details behind a large campus event.

03 / TRANSFERABLE SKILLS

My approach.

Every project has taught me something different. These are a few habits I carry with me, whether I'm creating content, working with a team, or reporting a story.

01 / ORGANIZE

Stay aligned.

I like having a clear understanding of priorities, deadlines, and expectations before starting a project. Whether I'm working independently or collaborating with others, I try to stay proactive, keep track of the details, and make sure my work fits into the larger goal.

Organization · Attention to detail
02 / COMMUNICATE

Make it clear.

My experience has taught me how to adapt my communication style across different platforms and audiences. From published articles and broadcast news packages to social media campaigns and digital content, I've learned to approach each format with its audience and purpose in mind.

Writing · Broadcast · Digital media
03 / ENGAGE

Listen first.

Some of my favorite stories started with a conversation. Interviewing public officials, community members, and local organizations has taught me the value of listening before telling a story.
